Broj poginulih u snažnom potresu koji je pogodio Japan na Novu godinu popeo se u srijedu na 62, a vlasti se trude što prije pomoći preživjelima suočenima s niskim temperaturama i pred obilnu kišu koja se očekuje tijekom dana.

Potres magnitude 7,6 pogodio je poluotok Noto u ponedjeljak poslijepodne, srušivši kuće i odsjekavši udaljena područja od prijeko potrebne pomoći. 

Za srijedu su u područjima pogođenima potresom prognozirane obilne kiše, što je povećalo strah od klizišta i moglo bi dodatno omesti napore da se spase brojni ljudi zarobljeni ispod ruševina.

Brojni su ozlijeđeni, a vlasti su se u utorak borile s požarima u nekoliko gradova i izvlačile ljude iz srušenih zgrada.

Prema Japanskoj meteorološkoj agenciji, zabilježeno je oko 200 potresa od prvog potresa u ponedjeljak. Agencija je upozorila da bi sljedećih dana moglo biti još jačih potresa.

U Suzuu, gradu s nešto više od 5000 kućanstava u blizini epicentra potresa, 90 posto kuća je možda uništeno, prema gradonačelniku Masuhiru Izumiyi.

"Situacija je katastrofalna", rekao je jučer gradonačelnik.
