Tisuće spasilaca nastavile su potragu za preživjelima nakon potresa koji je na Novu godinu u Japanu ubio najmanje 77 ljudi, uz nadu da će spasiti što više osoba mogu unutar trodnevnog vremenskog okvira za preživljavanje koji završava u četvrtak poslijepodne.

Gradonačelnik teško pogođenog grada Suzua Masuhiro Izumiya rekao je u srijedu navečer kako je ostalo još malo vremena i kako će uskoro proći 72 sata od potresa. "Moramo skupiti svu preostalu snagu da nastavimo s naporima spašavanja", dodao je. Prema hitnim službama, stopa preživljavanja opada 72 sata nakon potresa.

Presječene ceste i udaljenost najteže pogođenih područja kompliciraju napore spašavanja. Gotovo 600 naknadnih potresa pogodilo je poluotok Noto, što povećava strah od klizišta i daljnje štete na infrastrukturi.

"U usporedbi s drugim katastrofama, situacija na cestama u Wajimi je vrlo loša. Osjećam da je potrebno više vremena nego inače da bi pomoć stigla", rekao je zdravstveni djelatnik Shunsaku Kohriki za Reuters u gradu Wajima. Dodao je kako će evakuirane osobe vjerojatno još neko vrijeme morati živjeti u doista teškim uvjetima.

Potpuni opseg štete i žrtava ostaje nejasan danima nakon najsmrtonosnijeg potresa u Japanu od 2016. Gradonačelnik Izumiya rekao je kako je u Suzuu 90 posto kuća možda uništeno. Svi smrtni slučajevi prijavljeni su u blizini epicentra potresa magnitude 7,6 u prefekturi Ishikawa. 

Više od 33.000 ljudi evakuirano je iz svojih domova, oko 100.000 kuća nema opskrbu vodom, oko 30.000 kućanstava ostalo je bez struje u Ishikawi, a povezivost mobilnih usluga u nekim područjima još uvijek je nestabilna.
