'Jedna stvar kod Putina nespojiva je s fašizmom, ali on citira ideologa fašizma i ima frustracije zbog povijesne kapitulacije!'
Ruski predsjednik Vladimir Putin u veljači je invaziju na Ukrajinu između ostalog opravdao potrebom "denacifikacije" te zemlje čiji režim Moskva već godinama opisuje kao fašistički. No, nakon napada i povećane represije u samoj Rusiji, neki su analitičari i kritičari ruske akcije samog Putina nazvali fašističkim vođom, a na isti su način opisivali i njegov režim. Na Zapadu se zato razvila rasprava: može li se Putinovu vladu nazvati fašističkom. Postoje relevantni zagovornici obje opcije: jedan od najpoznatijih povjesničara na svijetu, škotski konzervativac Niall Ferguson u nedavnoj epizodi podcasta GoodFellows američkog trusta mozgova Hoover Institution rekao je da mu se čini da je Rusija pod Putinom postala fašistički režim zbog "otrovnog koktela ruskog nacionalizma, pravoslavlja i imperijalne nostalgije što je distinktivno fašističko obilježje". Zatim je dao primjere ruskih zločina u Ukrajini i nedavnog Putinova skupa na stadionu u Moskvi koje je nazvao fašističkima, ali je usto dodao da "Putin nije Hitler".
